Our Ayrshire Cows

Meet our "herd".  They provide our family with milk and half-ton pets.

Lane's End Hillary

We obtained Hillary in the fall of 1998 from a farm near Ovid, Michigan.  Hillary was the last Ayrshire of a retired farmer who made his first Ayrshire sale to pay for his then-soon-to-be wife's wedding rings; so she's from a very old cow family.  She is naturally polled (not able to grow horns) and was exceptionally good at turning pasture into impressive amounts of milk.  Hillary lived to a ripe old age of 16 years old.

Dandy's New Little Lane P

Lane is Hillary's only purebred heifer calf (and her last calf--at 14 years old).  Lane is also naturally polled and carries on her mother's old-fashioned Ayrshire type and great ability to process pasture.  Her milk is running 3.2 % protein & 3.5 % fat.  She is A2A2.

Marbrae Belleval

Here's Belle at the 2011 Michigan Dairy Show, where she was the State Campion Ayrshire.  (That same week she was scored Excellent-91.)  We obtained Belle at the 2008 Ohio Ayrshire Sale.  She is from a well known Canadian herd and is a much more modern type.  She's not as good at making milk on pasture, but you throw in a good TMR and she does very nicely.  Belle last freshened on July 24, 2012.  Her milk is running 3.3 % protein & 5.8 % fat.  Her scc score usually runs around 0!  She is A1A2.

Dandy's Memory Lane Bud P

Here's Emily (ML-y) four weeks after her third calf, which was born on March 1, 2013.   Emily was born on May 8, 2009 out of Lane by the Charlie Sayles' bull we owned, Hawksfield Brad.  She is genetically polled.  Her milk is running 3.0 % protein & 4.6 % fat, and at her peak she produces almost 75 lb./day!   She is A2A2.

Dandy's Bronelle

Nelle was born on July 24, 2012 out of Belle by the Charlie Sayles' bull we owned, Hawksfield Brad.  She is not genetically polled, and she is A1A2.  Nelle will probably be available for sale when she freshens in 2014, as we don't have enough room to keep ALL the cows (though we'd like to!).

Dandy's Canadensis Lane P

Candy was born on September 1, 2012 out of Lane by our own bull, Dandy's Wm Bradford (so named because he was born on Thanksgiving day.).  She is genetically polled.  She is A1A2.  We haven't decided yet whether we'll be keeping her or not.

Dandy's No 7 Lane P

Seven (guess where that name came from) was born on April 4, 2012 out of Emily by a Family Af-Ayr farms bull from Wisconsin. We plan to use him for breeding in the fall of 2013, ultimately selling him.  He is genetically polled, and he is A2A2.  We hope to collect semen from him this summer.
